You must meet the following requirements to be considered for a foster home or treatment foster home license:
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Have enough bedroom space and an extra bed for a child.
*A child in care may share a bedroom with your own child or another child in care; however, the bedroom must be at least 50 square feet per child in the room. - Reside in a house or apartment that meets a safety inspection.
- Provide documentation of homeowner’s or renter’s insurance coverage.
- Possess a vehicle, a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance coverage.
- Have an adequate income to meet your own family’s needs.
- Provide a statement from a physician that all household members are in good health and free from any physical/mental conditions that could hinder the ability to foster parent.
- Have no significant history of civil or criminal convictions that are substantially related to caring for children.
- Have no history or record of abuse or neglect.
- Have the appropriate motivation to want to foster parent.
- Have a good understanding of the needs of children who have been abused or neglected.
- Possess the willingness to work with the others in achieving a foster child’s permanence.
- Have the time to attend 12, 3-hour sessions of Foster Parent training.
Foster Parent training is free for all new foster care applicants and the classes are offered at various times.
