The Community Panels is a Racine County Human Services youth-based program designed to keep first time juvenile offenders out of the traditional justice system.
Community Panels volunteers give first time offenders, apprehended for a misdemeanor, the option of appearing before a panel of community volunteers rather than entering the juvenile court system.
Juveniles who accept and complete the contracted obligation offered by the panel avoid the stigma and possible effects of a criminal record.
Obligations assigned by the panels may include apology letters to the victim, school attendance, behavior contracts, restitution and/or community service.
All panels are staffed by community volunteers who are from all walks of life. Training and ongoing support is provided.
It is community members like yourself who make this program possible.
You must meet the following requirements to be a Community Panels volunteer:
- Live within Racine County
- Available 2-3 hours per week
- Willing to work with youth in a firm, caring manner
- Desire to make a difference in a young person’s life
